KM Malta Airlines (KM), the new flagship carrier for Malta, has signed a bi-lateral codeshare agreement with the Lufthansa Group (LHG) which will begin when the carrier commences operations on March 31.

The current national carrier, Air Malta, will cease to operate on March 30th after failing to get a much needed cash injection from the European
Commission.

Last year the Maltese government committed an investment for a new, then unamed, national carrier, now unveiled as KM Malta Airlines.

According to the KM Malta Airlines website, the new airline will serve 17 destinations with its eight aircraft. Destinations include London, Paris, Madrid, Rome, Milan, Munich, Amsterdam, Dusseldorf, Berlin, Zurich and Brussels.

The codeshare agreement will connect the networks and flights of participating partner airlines and will enable customers of the respective airlines to book a single ticket across multiple flights involving KM Malta Airlines, Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian Airlines and Brussels Airlines.

The agreement means passengers travelling with the new airline can reach thirty-five new destinations across Europe through flights operated by Lufthansa Group.

The Group already serves Malta directly from Frankfurt, Munich and Zurich but the partnership means Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines and Swiss will place their airline codes on KM Malta Airlines’ flights between Malta and Munich, Vienna, Brussels and Zurich, enabling further global connectivity from the island state.

A
spokesperson for KM Malta Airlines, said: “This codeshare agreement significantly broadens our
reach to Europe. The Lufthansa Group holds an important position in the
global aviation industry, and this collaboration is poised to enhance
our presence in the European market.”

The codeshare will apply for flights departing when the new carrier launches, from Sunday 31st March 2024.

The KM Malta Airlines summer 2024 schedule will operate from 31st March 2024 until 26th October 2024.
