Libyan customs authorities seized 12,000 weapons that were being smuggled aboard a commercial ship from Malta, press in the North African country are reporting.
According to a report by The Libya Review, the Misrata Port Customs Centre, in cooperation with the Joint Operations Forced seized a 20-foot ship containing 12,000 pistols.
The report identifies the ship as the Liberian-flagged Belitaki, which had come from Malta via the CMA CGM shipping line. Inspections found the thousands of pistols camouflaged by “household items”
A statement by the Misrata Port Customs Centre goes on to confirm that this seizure is part of a broader operation to combat the trafficking of drugs and other prohibited items.
Last month, Libyan security forces announced they had seized “advanced and dangerous weapons” that were hidden in the desert, and due to be smuggled to Egypt.
