Prime Minister Robert Abela said that around 100,000 Maltese people work in professional or managerial jobs as he stressed that foreign workers are crucial for certain sectors.

“It is a positive reality that many more Maltese youths have taken strides in their education they now have more opportunities than they did 15 years ago,” Abela told a political rally in Mosta today. “There are now almost 100,000 Maltese people who work in professional or managerial sectors. In the past ten years, 80% of new jobs that were taken up by Maltese workers were all of a managerial or professional level.”

“This has led to the formation of a new middle class that we managed to create since 2013. We are offering youths opportunities that didn’t used to exist, while maintaining a historically low unemployment rate.”

Stressing that foreign workers are providing a crucial service to the community, Abela recounted how Dar il-Providenza director Fr Martin Micallef recently told him that the home employs around 100 foreign workers, including 88 from the Philippines.

“With the greatest love and dedication, they are taking care of the angelic residents there, along with many Maltese workers there, ensuring they live in dignity.”

Earlier this week, Abela’s predecessor Joseph Muscat said that foreigners work in jobs that “serve” the Maltese.

“It is dignified work, but we need these jobs so that our elderly in care homes have people ready to clean them when they soil themselves,” he said.

“It’s not that this work disgusts the Maltese – they used to do it – but it’s difficult nowadays. Just like my parents worked for me to get an education, so too if your children get an education and progress in their studies, you would want them to become teachers, lawyers, and specialists. We will therefore end up with constantly fewer people ready to do tough jobs.”
