Women’s Basketball Rolls Past Rochester, Runs Win Streak to Seven – Washington University in St. Louis

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Washington University in St. Louis women’s basketball team utilized strong second and third quarters to overpower University of Rochester, 70-55, Sunday, February 11. With the win, WashU pushed its University Athletic Association win streak to seven. The Bears’ record upped to 15-7 (8-3 UAA), while UR’s record dipped to 10-12 (5-6 UAA). 

 

Senior Jessica Brooks dropped her fifth 20-point game of the season as Brooks recorded a game-high 20 points in the victory. Additionally, Brooks tied the game-high with her pair of three-pointers. Brooks added six rebounds, one assist, one block, and one steal. 
 
First year Lexy Harris secured 14 points, on 7-of-12 shooting. Harris hauled in six boards for the Bears. 
 
First year Catherine Goodwin produced a double-digit scoring total, finishing with 11. Goodwin dished out a game-high five assists. 
 
Junior Brenna Loftus welcomed a season-high nine rebounds in the victory. 
 

As a team, WashU connected on 28-of-58 (48.3%) from the field, 8-of-18 (44.4%) from long range, and 6-of-14 (42.9%) from the charity stripe. 

 

Once again, the Bears asserted their dominance in the paint, racking of a 22-point, 42-20, margin in points in the paint. 

 

WashU turned 15 Yellowjacket turnovers into 16 points. 

 

However, UR held the upper hand in bench points (32-21) and second chance points (12-4). 

 

The Bears saw a slow start in the opening quarter, only securing six points. Brooks, sophomore Nailah McBeth, and Goodwin each recorded two points in the first stanza. After the first quarter, UR held the seven-point, 13-6, advantage. 
 

WashU got things rolling in the second quarter on a quick 7-0 run. The run saw four points from Harris and a Starks three. After the run, the Yellowjackets lead was cut to four, 17-13, with 6:25 left until halftime. 

 

After a UR layup, the Bears turned in another run, this time an 15-0 variety. The run started with another Starks long ball. First year Amelia Rosin notched a steal on Rochester’s ensuing possession, which led to a fastbreak layup by Harris. UR then missed a jumper and Harris secured the defensive board. On the outlet pass to Loftus, Loftus found Rosin for a three. After the made bucket, WashU erased the early double-digit deficit and took the one-point, 21-20, lead with 4:01 remaining in the second. 
 

With no made baskets for a minute of game time, the Bears continued its run, seeing a free throw from Goodwin, a Hughes jumper, and two buckets from Harris to end the momentum shifting 15-0 run. The Bears secured the six-point, 28-20, lead with 1:35 left until halftime. 

 

After four points from the Yellowjackets, Hughes sunk two free throws right before halftime as WashU took the six-point, 30-24, halftime lead. 

 

In the span of 56 seconds in the early stages of the third, the Bears connected on three buckets to extend its lead to 11, 38-27. 

 

Midway through the third, WashU welcomed back-to-back long balls from Hughes and Brooks. The two three-pointers pushed WashU’s cushion to 18, 48-30, with 4:55 left in the third. 

 

The Bears maintained at least a 14-point lead for the latter half of the third quarter. After 30 minutes of action, WashU held the commanding 16-point, 55-39, cushion. 

 

Goodwin got the scoring started in the fourth on a free throw. Following the free throw, the Yellowjackets spun a quick 4-0 run to trim the deficit to 13, 56-43, with 7:31 left in the contest. 


Rochester cut WashU’s lead to single digits, 60-51, on a layup with 5:21 remaining. 

 

However, the Bears responded with a timely 5-0 run to own the 14-point, 65-51, advantage with just 3:45 on the clock. In the run, Harris hit a layup and Brooks dialed up a long ball. 

 

After the run, UR missed several shots, allowing the Bears run away with the 15-point, 70-55, victory. 

 

WashU will play its first home contest in the month of February with a tough UAA contest against top-ranked New York University, Friday, February 16. Tip-off from the Field House is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. and will be the first leg of a doubleheader with the men’s basketball program. Friday’s contest will serve as Black History Month celebration/Neighbors Day.
